MLA Formatting and Style

This guide provides information and resources to assist with MLA 9 formatting and style.

Introduction to MLA

MLA 9th edition is the current edition of the style guide created and maintained by the Modern Language Association. As SENMC does not use MLA, this guide is geared toward students who may be required to use MLA for other purposes or classes.

Margins: 1 inch on all sides

Text Formatting:

  • Choose a font such as Times New Roman and set the font size to about 12.
  • Left align the text of the body
  • Double space entire document
  • Indent the first line of each paragraph

Title: At the top of the first page write your name, your instructors name, the class name and number, and then the date. Each item should be on a line of its own. The title of your paper should be centered on a new line below the date.

Date: The date should in written Day Month Year (4 July 2021). Abbreviate any month that is longer than four letters.

Running Head and Page Number: In the header of your paper, enter your last name (surname) followed by a space and the page number. If possible, use the automatic numbering provided by your word processor for simplicity.

Internal Headings and Subheadings: Short papers will not require headings. If needed, headings of the same level should be styled consistently and use formatting that reflects its level of importance.

Placement of Works Cited: Place your works cited list at the end of your paper. Center the heading title of Works Cited at the top of the page. If only citing one item change the heading to Work Cited.

Each entry should begin on a new line, flush to the margin. If an entry requires more than one line, indent each subsequent line of that entry. Many word processors will have a format setting called hanging indent that will handle the subsequent indentations.
